The village of El Rompido is situated on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and has remained largely untouched by mass tourism, although it is now slowly starting to creep in. El Rompido has waterfront bars and restaurants. This is the place to come if you enjoy eating fish. There is nothing more alluring than the smell of fresh fish (locally caught) being grilled over an open barbecue accompanied by a glass of extremely cold wine.

In the old town of El Rompido, the 15th century Iglesia de San Salvador (church) is worth a visit for its impressive tower, with stunning views across to Portugal. Visitors should also not miss the unique sites of the Baroque style houses, the two lighthouses (old and new) and the coming and going of boats in the fishing harbour.

From the village of El Rompido, there are marvelous views across the estuary to the Flecha del Rompido and the wetlands of the Piedras (Paraje Natural Marismas del Río) which are both recognised as natural park areas.

The Flecha del Rompido is a 12 km long and 150 metre wide sandbank formed by tidal action, running parallel to the coast. It contains an unspoilt beach accessible by boat from El Rompido. You can hire boats or take the ferry that runs across to the Flecha and marvel at the natural beauty of the sandbank. Walk across the sandbank to the side that faces the Atlantic and it is a different world. It is worth remembering to take sufficient food and drink with you when visiting the Flecha, as there are no bars or restaurants on the sandbank.

The rich plant and animal life in this protected area make it a haven for nature lovers. The Flecha, inhabited only by birds - terns, seagulls, egrets and many other species of bird life, is an oasis of peace and tranquility. The habitat is also shared by other rare and endangered species such as the osprey, oyster catcher and red crested pochard. There are chameleons and other small mammals on the sandbank.

The high productivity of the wetlands supports a profitable marine population including carpet shells, gilthead and eels. Activities are aimed at the economic exploitation of such marine produce and the local fishermen respect the environment in which they operate.

There is a new 80-berth marina at the heart of El Rompido, which is the first of four that are planned for this stretch of coastline. The natural sand barriers here offer a perfect natural harbour for yachts and fishing boats and the local authorities are also finalising a project to dredge a deep channel at the end of the sand barrier to accommodate large yachts in the new marinas.
