Like all villages in Spain, Cartaya has it's own share of festivals and fiestas. Besides the annual start to the year - New Year's Eve, the second most important fiesta is the "Dia de Reyes" or the "Three Kings Day" normally held on the night of the 5 January every year.

In the evening, a procession of floats parade throughout the town. The three Kings - Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar each have their own float from where they toss copious amounts of sweats and small presents into the crowd. Although this activity may be aimed at the children, the adults have just as much fun scrambling for the sweets.

The rest of the floats are gloriously decorated with different themes and the children are dressed up in costumes that must take the parents a good half of the year to make. It truly is something worth while seeing and enjoyment for the whole family.

The most important fiesta for the village is the Semana Santa or Easter week. It is the grandest and finest of all processions in Spain and is something not to be missed. It is an event which many visitors may find a little strange but to the people of Cartaya, it is an important part of their lives.

Another fiesta that the villagers celebrate is the Romaria, normally held at the end of May. This fiesta is to give thanks to the Harvest Saint in anticipation of a good harvest for the year ahead. The village people occupy the area of Pradera de San Isidro Recreation Area, just south of the town with their wagons, tents or awnings.

They sing, dance, talk and invite friends to partake in a glass or two of alcohol and sample some local food. The ladies and gentlemen dress in the typical Andalucian clothes and many arrive to the event on horseback or wagon. On the Sunday, the event ends with the offerings made to the Saint in the main church in the village.

Another popular festival is the Cartaya Feria, which starts on a Wednesday in October and runs through to the early hours of the following Monday morning. This festival is open 24 hours a day. There are private bars (open only to invited guests) and public bars. There are also plenty of facilities to eat and amusement rides for children.

Most evenings, live music is to be found under the large tent situated in the middle of the Feria, but it is on Saturday night when the music rocks until approximately 6am on Sunday morning. Not to be outdone, the ladies of the village dress up in their typical flamenco styled dresses on the Thursday and dance the night away. This event is for the whole family - babes in arms, toddlers, youngsters, parents and grandparents all come together to enjoy this time with family and friends.
